José González & Augustifamiljen: ‘Waterfalls’

Last Friday, González performed a very folksy cover of TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’ with fellow Swedes Augustifamiljen, on a late-night talkshow.

González’ take on what has become an r’n’b classic, features generous amounts of both acoustic guitars and horns, as well as a fair bit of subtle joviality.

St. Vincent: ‘Birth in Reverse’

Dropped months back, ‘Birth in Reverse’ by American singer-songwriter and all-around badass Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, still remains one of this year’s strongest singles.

Now, it has an accompanying video to boot. The video is both jagged and vivid, like the song itself, and serves as a gentle but firm reminder that Clark is one of the most interesting musicians around.

Purity Ring: ‘Push Pull’

Various collaborations aside, it’s been a few years since we last heard anything from Canadian electronic outfit Purity Ring.

Even though their new single doesn’t quite top some of the ethereally gloomy tunes from their debut album, it still holds its own — adopting a more pompous and poppy sound.

Moreover, it’s good to have them back.

Marilyn Manson: ‘Third Day of a Seven Day Binge’

I’ve never really bought into the entire Marilyn Manson schtick, but his new single — with its discordant, jangly, and surprisingly mellow sound — somehow strikes a chord with me.

The single is precursory for a new Manson album, scheduled for release next year, and can be downloaded for free via his website.

Marianne Faithfull: ‘Sparrows Will Sing’

In case it evaded anyone’s attention, the Roger Waters-composed first single off Marianne Faithfull’s new album is absolutely phenomenal.

Den Sorte Skole feat. the Danish National Chamber Orchestra: Live 2014

Den Sorte Skole (‘The Black School’) is probably one of the most interesting musical endeavours going on in Denmark right now. Starting out as a DJ collective in the more traditional sense of the word in the early ’00s, they have since moved on to produce music that takes cut & paste sampling to a whole new level. Their latest album, ‘Lektion III, consists of nothing but samples lifted off 250+ old vinyl records collected from 51 different countries. This odd mix of genres, cultures and influences makes up a rather unconventional listening experience that is impossible to pinpoint — and rather mesmerizing.

This audio clip is a performance of their collaboration with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra; a rather intriguing partnership that takes the symphonic sounds of an orchestra to an entirely different, worldly place.

‘Lektion III can be downloaded from their website.
